Exterior Wall Solutions for Homes in Glasgow
We provide a range of wall finishing systems designed to protect and enhance homes across Glasgow and the surrounding Greater Glasgow area. Our services are tailored to improve durability, energy efficiency and visual appeal.
Durable Roughcasting
Services
Roughcasting is a durable exterior coating that is widely used on homes throughout Scotland. Its textured finish protects external walls from moisture and harsh weather while giving the building a solid and traditional appearance.
Elegant House Rendering Services
House rendering provides a smooth and consistent surface that modernises the exterior of a property. The render layer also helps protect walls from water penetration and everyday wear caused by the elements.
Efficient External Wall Insulation Services
External wall insulation systems help reduce heat escaping through the building structure. This upgrade improves energy efficiency while adding a fresh rendered finish to the outside of the property.
Our Warranty
Honest Protection You Can Count On
At JAN Roughcasting & House Rendering, we believe in making promises we can keep. The industry is full of contractors offering impressive-sounding guarantees that prove worthless when issues arise – companies that vanish, rebrand or simply refuse to respond. We take pride in doing things properly, which is why we offer a genuine 5-year warranty designed to give you real peace of mind.
There is good reason behind this approach. Faulty rendering does not take long to fail. Problems such as cracking, bubbling or poor adhesion almost always appear within the first year, particularly after Glasgow’s wet and frosty winters put the system under pressure. Our warranty covers this essential testing period, ensuring your render has demonstrated its quality. Properly executed roughcasting and rendering will serve your property reliably for many years to come – and at JAN Roughcasting & House Rendering, we make certain every Glasgow project is completed to the highest standard from the very start.

What Clients in Glasgow Say
Hardworking Finishes for Glasgow Businesses
Roughcasting and rendering have protected commercial buildings across Glasgow for well over a century. Trusted for their resilience and low maintenance requirements, these external finishes remain a practical and attractive choice for business properties facing the demands of Scotland’s unpredictable climate.
Modern commercial rendering has evolved into a sophisticated protective system. A reinforced installation features a polymer-enhanced basecoat, fully embedded fibreglass mesh to guard against movement and cracking, and a durable finish coat incorporating natural aggregate for texture and strength. This delivers exceptional resistance to knocks and abrasion, reliable adhesion to older or uneven masonry, and robust weatherproofing against Glasgow’s heavy rainfall and strong winds.
For business owners, commercial landlords and developers operating in Glasgow, investing in professional rendering makes sound financial sense. A correctly installed system retains its appearance and protective qualities for decades, keeping maintenance costs low while preserving the building’s value and professional image. JAN Roughcasting & House Rendering provides dependable commercial solutions for shops, offices, industrial facilities, schools and multi-purpose properties throughout the city.
From Inspection to Completed Exterior
Our structured process ensures each rendering project in Glasgow is carried out efficiently while maintaining a high standard of workmanship.
01
Initial Property Assessment
We start by examining the exterior condition of the building and discussing your goals for the project. This allows us to recommend the most suitable roughcasting, rendering or insulation solution.
02
Surface Preparation & Application
Before any rendering begins, the exterior walls are carefully prepared to ensure proper adhesion. Our team then applies the selected finishing system using reliable professional methods.
03
Final Inspection & Completion
Once the work is finished, we check the entire surface to ensure the finish is consistent and durable. The result is a refreshed exterior that improves both protection and appearance.

Understanding the Two Main Facade Systems
Roughcasting / Pebble Dash (Dry Dash System)
This option represents a traditional approach known for creating a formidable, hard-wearing exterior. The technique involves casting clean, natural stone aggregates onto a freshly applied, polymer-modified backing coat. In the “dry dash” style, the stones remain uncoated, allowing their natural texture and varied tones to define the building’s character. The result is a substantial, highly textured “stone cladding” that provides immense strength against impact and weathering. Because of its thickness and coarse profile, it is particularly forgiving when applied to masonry that is old, irregular, or out of plumb, offering a classic and robust finish.
- 1 - SUBSTRATE - The original masonry façade that provides the solid base for the roughcast build-up.
- 2 - DEEP PENETRATING BONDING AGENT (0.1mm) - A blue-toned penetrating primer applied in a thin coat to seal and stabilise the wall surface. It enhances bonding performance and leaves a light blue, translucent finish once applied.
- 3 - ENHANCED BASE ADHESIVE RENDER/MORTAR (5–6mm) - A grey cementitious basecoat installed at roughly 5–6mm thickness. This layer evens out the surface and creates a stable platform for reinforcement.
- 4 - REINFORCED, HEAVY-DUTY FIBREGLASS, CRACK-RESISTANT MESH (2mm) - A strong fibreglass mesh embedded within the base layer to improve structural integrity. It helps distribute stresses and protects the render against cracking.
- 5 - MECHANICAL SYSTEM FIXINGS - White disc-headed fixings mechanically anchored into the wall. They secure the render layers firmly in place and increase overall system durability.
- 6 - SECOND PASS OF BASE ADHESIVE RENDER (smoothing) - An additional grey coat applied over the reinforced base. For roughcasting, this layer is horizontally scratched using a wire comb tool, creating ridges that form a strong mechanical bond for the next layer.
- 7 - DASH RECEIVER / EXPOSED RENDER (approx. 10mm) - A thick white render coat applied at approximately 10mm depth. It serves as the receiving layer designed to hold the decorative aggregate securely.
- 8 - DRY DASH / STONES/CHIPS/AGGREGATES - A textured outer finish made from natural stone chippings, typically an 80% white and 20% black blend. The stones are thrown onto the wet dash receiver, forming a traditional, hard-wearing and weather-resistant façade.
Rendering – Silicone Render System
- 1 - SUBSTRATE - The existing external wall (brick, blockwork or concrete) that acts as the structural backing for the entire render system.
- 2 - DEEP PENETRATING BONDING AGENT (0.1mm) - A low-viscosity, light blue primer applied in a very thin layer by spray, brush or roller. It penetrates into the surface, strengthens the substrate and improves adhesion. Visually, it leaves a subtle bluish tint with a slightly wet appearance.
- 3 - ENHANCED BASE ADHESIVE RENDER/MORTAR (5–6mm) - A grey adhesive render applied at approximately 5–6mm thickness. This coat provides the core strength of the system, levels the wall surface and forms the bedding layer for reinforcement.
- 4 - REINFORCED, HEAVY-DUTY FIBREGLASS, CRACK-RESISTANT MESH (2mm) - A durable dark blue fibreglass mesh embedded into the basecoat. It reinforces the render, increases tensile strength and helps prevent cracking caused by structural or thermal movement.
- 5 - MECHANICAL SYSTEM FIXINGS - White plastic anchors with large, flat heads that mechanically secure the render system to the wall. These fixings provide additional support and improve resistance to wind loads.
- 6 - SECOND PASS OF BASE ADHESIVE RENDER (smoothing) (approx. 3mm) - A second grey adhesive layer applied over the mesh to fully encapsulate it and achieve a smooth, even surface. This coat is carefully trowelled flat to prepare the wall for finishing.
- 7 - SILICONE PRIMER (white or coloured) - A thin primer coat with a paint-like consistency, applied to regulate absorption and ensure consistent colour coverage. It is typically white or tinted in a lighter shade than the final render.
- 8 - SILICONE RENDER / TOP COAT (1.5–2mm) - The finishing silicone-based render applied at 1.5–2mm thickness. It contains fine aggregate, giving the surface a subtle texture visible at close range, while maintaining a uniform appearance from a distance. The final colour is generally slightly deeper than the primer beneath.
